About 10:00pm the guard naps on my door and tells me that "they" want me to sleep with my head toward the table, near the toilet, instead of toward the corner of the room, otherwise, says the guard, he will wake me up every time he does his rounds to make sure I am okay. Yes, this is their logic: Waking someone up will help them be okay. Sleep deprivation rebranded as a security concern. The disadvantage to having your head positioned toward the toilet is that they can shine their lights directly into your face instead of reflecting them off of the stainless steel band up at the ceiling. As the guard goes down the hallway telling other inmates I hear him instruct complainers to write to the security director. I would like to point out that I am not suicidal, nor do I have health issues that might compel any concern for my ability to make it through the night. Actually, I bet what has antagonized the current wave of sleep disruption is because some nineteen year old kid was beat to death by his cellmate up in Green Bay and the guards didn't notice until morning. Boxing people together who have demonstrable lack of self control and propensity for violence is bad. Neglecting proper medical care, rehabilitative programs, and skill development like coping mechanisms is not the DOC approach to preventing these issues. Harassment and sleep disruption is the response under their discretionary standards. Where all sensibility is abandoned because the decision making authorities lack all interest in inmate welfare in their effort to avoid admitting fault for their wrongdoing. This is just so unbelievably backwards. Two wrongs don't make things right. It is just more wrong. Keep in mind there are a lot of young guys in here and most people here will need to return to society. Will the further alienation and separatism somehow result in the re-assimilation of contributing members of society? If you ever end up with frostbite on your fingers, do not rub your hands together to warm them up. It may cause further damage to the nerves which may never go back to normal. Further damage is not a solution. It will only increase and perpetuate the problem. This system needs an overhaul by good people who paid attention in school.
