I have been in Unit 12, cell 3 since Friday and my current cellie seems to be a fairly cheery guy. He is good enough to let me borrow a book so I have anything to do while I wait to be staffed. This is the older portion of the prison still in use which has brick up to chest height going around the room with painted concrete above that. The brick itself is a glossy sandstone. Door is the usual solid steel with narrow window and "chuck hole" or "trap" for passing a food tray. The window is fairly large and has vertical bars on the outside, then the actual window, and a heavy metal screen inside of that. There is also a stainless steel, wall mounted toilet, tiny porcelain sink, and standard polished tin above that for use as a mirror. The floor is a chipped stone of reds, browns, and black with a metal bunk bed bolted to it. The bed used to be a light brown or taupe color but was painted over with battleship gray, like the doors and window frames. The scratched surfaces and peeling paint reveal the layers. The light is a double stick fluorescent in a white metal box on the ceiling. There is a plumbing access door about four feet tall and painted gray as well, just above the toilet. The walls and ceiling are a very light gray. A large cork board with a wooden frame is fastened to the wall with plenty of graffiti all over it. It has a sort of asylum feel to it that feels like it suggests you either are crazy or should really try it out while you are here. It does not have all the screaming and pounding of jail but guys here are convicts so they have been evaluated for medication to condition them competent for trial, and the fakers aren't trying to make a play for "not guilty by means of mental disease or defect."
I go to medical and pick up my prison issue glasses today. Pentax Z87-2+, Smoke, 145mm, F9800. The lenses have 23HO+ inscribed on them. Not only are they ugly but they seem to prism separate the light so that things get a blue or red silhouette, especially out to the peripheral edges. We get to go outside for recreation this evening at 6:45pm. A Kenosha inmate who had his trial in Judge Rosell's court at the same time my trial was taking place is also in Unit 12. He comes up to me while I am standing next to the pull up bars and asks if I have been appointed or have hired appellate representation. He also says he watched what he could of my trial and we share sentiments of how crooked Kenosha is. He also mentions that his Judge commented about betting my Judge about who would finish their trial first. Maybe he, Schroeder, didn't expect the District Attorney would be filibustering subpoenas and witnesses. He probably felt confident that he blocked enough information from trial to railroad me rather quickly. I don't know the name of the other Kenosha inmate, but we were also in the same housing unit in Kenosha about the same time as I was housed with Marquan Washington. When we return from rec my cellie tells me that a bunch of the guys were talking about me and my case out in the yard. He offers some details of their rumors and gossip. It seems to me that they eavesdrop my phone calls and do a lot of guessing. Someone even speculated that I was just sentenced, not knowing or realizing that my trip to Kenosha was for a restitution hearing. Lots of guys end up in prison and go back for sentencing when they get revocated while on probation or extended supervision. No privacy for phone calls, paperwork, or anything, really.
