I was at legal access this morning when an inmate punched out another one, climbed on top of him and continued punching the unconscious inmate, then decided to walk away only to double back and then proceeded to smash the unconscious inmates head on the concrete. Then the inmate goes to the gym and proceeds to work out with blood all over him as though nothing happened. Not only were the guards not paying attention to the cameras that covered where the altercation transpired, but the guards doing laps had looked in the room and took no notice of the unconscious inmate as he lay there so brutalized his mother would struggle to recognize him. From legal access/law library I saw them escort the inmate out who did it. The inmate who was beaten was taken out with a neck brace on a stretcher. When I was let out of the law library room one of the guards kept saying "It's bad. It's really bad." Because the guards wheeled the stretcher through the Range 1 hallway, all of the inmates got to see how bad the guys face was, and they keep talking about it. Most fights are just a few punches and many don't get caught. We are locked down so much that frustration is exceptionally high and perhaps the inmates got into a verbal exchange from their cells or maybe it was an issue with being able to use a phone. The rumor mill shall churn.
One of the inmates on this Range says that an inmate in Green Bay threw boiling fluid on a guard and melted the guards face, so they put the inmate in the hole and sprayed his cell full of pepper spray until he died of suffocation. Then the guards had inmate workers clean up the pepper spray before the guards themselves tore up a mattress in the cell and claimed the inmate had hung himself. When the inmate workers complained the inmate was dead after the pepper spray and before any torn up mattress was in the cell, they were fired from their jobs and sent to other prisons. Also, there isn't anything to hang yourself from in the cells. Even though it didn't make sense and there were witnesses that could discredit the story, the official reports alleged otherwise. Kenosha had stories about how guards get away with violence and murder as well. Although I cannot confirm the story, I can see it being possible. They can get away with saying anything, even perfectly absurd, is true. Without any way to preserve video evidence or get legal help, the D.O.C. can get away with most anything. "For the needs and security of the institution."
